Make to Order – Gentle Manufacturing Supporting Nature

Don’t tell anyone, but I am a bit of a geek. I love traditional historic wallpapers. I’ve even peeked behind the scenes at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester and the V&A in London to view their collections. I found that historical wallpaper processes haven’t always been kind to the environment. The designs, feel, and even the musty smells take you back to a time that no longer exists, when arsenic was part of the manufacturing process, thankfully printing has moved on.

I like visiting wallpaper factories, the people, the sounds, the colours, seeing traditional and new technology working alongside each other, changing the way the industry prints while supporting sustainability. I want to be part of this new knowledge and skills to create a business that doesn’t come at the expense of the planet but instead supports it. Which is a tough ask when you rely on trees for your wallpapers.

At first, I didn’t know how I was going to achieve this. It took some time to research and identify processes that align with gentle manufacturing. And I quickly realised sustainability is not just one action but more of a process and way of thinking.

A Change in Thinking – Lost in Delamere Forest

I like to go for walks, but it has been a while since I walked, or rather, got lost in a forest.

I usually like to walk with purpose, trying to grab as much as I can with my senses as I march through to the end game to find a cake or a bacon barm. It was only recently, while getting lost in the forest, that I had no choice but to stop, take time and take it in. Noticing how animals use the trees and forest floor to live. I get so lost in my thoughts and to-do list that I usually miss this. But I suddenly remembered while looking at these old trees that they do not stand alone; they are little homes to animals, help the soil, water cycle, clean the air, releasing oxygen while calmly supporting a whole biodiversity community. So, replanting protects all of this.

I had always committed to supporting a charity through the business, and with this in mind, it made sense to support The Woodland Trust. A charity that works to save, restore and replant forests around the UK. From every sale of our wallpaper, a percentage of your money goes to supporting the trust.

What Makes Our Wallpaper Different

I choose gentle manufacturing and not to mass-produce to support the environment. Every single roll of our wallpaper is printed to order and hand-finished, specifically for you. What does that mean? No warehouses full of unsold stock. No rolls destined for landfill because the colour didn't sell as well as predicted. Just your wallpaper, made for when you need it. This process creates a 2-week lead time at the time of your order, and with your patience, this process will help save forests.

FSC-Certified Paper

FSC-certified sources, I used to think what does this mean?

The Forest Stewardship Council, which I like to imagine as wizardly forest guardians, set the gold standard for responsible forestry. So, the trees used in our wallpapers come from replanted, biodiverse protected locations where employees are treated fairly.

Water-Based Inks

Printing ink used to be very damaging to the environment, but this has all changed.

I use water-based, low-VOC inks, which don’t contain any vinyl, plastic or harmful chemicals. (VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds).

Made in England

I am very proud that I design and manufacture LOVEJanet in the UK. I work with local manufacturers and suppliers who share my commitment to quality and sustainability. This chain of thought and standards, combined with the original design and quality of the finished product, is why I can call LOVEJanet a premium brand.

I spent a lot of time reading what the definition of a luxury brand is. I found companies calling themselves luxury when they cut corners and only have a small part of their process made in their home country due to costs.

I won’t lie; it costs more to manufacture in the UK. I could have taken the easier route. Mass produce, use cheaper materials, manufacture overseas, slash costs. But that's not the kind of company I want.

For me, it's worth it. Supporting local industry and reducing our carbon footprint just makes sense. It's not just saving the planet with lower emissions, it’s a chance to support British manufacturing and skilled jobs, better quality control and a faster turnaround for you.

Small-Batch Production & Minimal Packaging

Printing to order in small batches means less energy-intensive production runs and more careful attention to each roll, resulting in lower emissions. The packaging is designed to be minimal, too. Just enough to protect your wallpaper in transit, nothing more.

Still Working on It

I’m not perfect – no one is. But I’m committed to getting better.

I’m constantly looking at my processes and asking: could I do it more sustainably? Is there a better option? What's next?

What This All Means

Every roll that arrives at your door started somewhere — in a sustainably managed forest, in a small UK print run, in a sketch on my desk. No vinyl, no plastic, no harmful chemicals. FSC-certified paper, water-based inks, made to order so nothing goes to waste. That's the business I want to be part of. And when you choose LOVEJanet, you're part of it too.

The Bottom Line

Sustainable wallpaper doesn't mean compromising on beauty, quality, or design. It means being thoughtful about how I make things. It means asking better questions and finding better answers.

It means creating wallpaper that feels like HOME.

Want to see the difference for yourself? Order a sample and experience the quality first-hand. Every sample is printed on the same FSC-certified paper as the rolls, with the same water-based inks and the same British manufacturing.
